Gluten Free Restaurant Review of Qdoba

Cali and I went to Qdoba for dinner.   Before we went I looked up the Allergen menu online.  We had the naked chicken burrito with cheese, sour cream, pica de gallo, black beans and rice.  Cali had a bowl of rice, beans and chicken from my big bowl.

The meal tasted great but when I got home – trouble!  Not sure what had gluten but something DID!  The meal didn’t stay with me.  Not sure I would feel confident to go back at this point.

I haven’t knowlingly had gluten in 12 days.   I have to say I really DO feel better without the Gluten.  So to have a night like tonight it helps remind me why I have been saying no to cookies, bread, and other yummy Gluten food items.  Hopefully tonight won’t set me back too far.

I just went to Qdoba for the first time tonight and was pretty disappointed. After checking out the allergen list online, it seemed like a naked taco salad would work well. Also, strangely the tortilla soup (without chips) would be fine, so I had my heart set on that combo.

We get to the restaurant and ask to see their hard-copy allergen menu. To my horror, all of the meats were marked as possibly containing wheat/gluten. One worker was trying to convince me that it would just be “trace amounts”, but at the same time I saw another worker mistakenly scoop chicken onto two tortillas and then dump it back into the chicken tray…

    No more Qdoba for me.

Everybody who assembles food at a burrito place handles flour tortillas all day. Imagine the sticky gluten from that tortilla as black ink from an ink pad. They spoon delicious gluten free ingredients into bowls, tacos and burritos. Some of that black ink gets onto the spoon. When an ingredient runs out, they grab the holder by the edge (with the glove) and switch it out. They might spoon or pour the rest of the food from the old holder into the fresh one.

Can you imagine how much metaphorical black ink is on everything by the end of the day?

I’m really disappointed. I use to live Qdoba but their GF menu leaves less to be desired. I guess I’ll go back to Chipotle. At least their chips are GF.
