Sometimes I feel that junk food is one of the hardest things when living Gluten Free. I eat my veggies and fruit like a good little girl, but sometimes I just need something totally bad for you and super tasty!
One of my pregnancy cravings has been onion rings. I have looked and couldn’t find a mix or frozen ones at a number of different grocery stores. So I hit the blog world and found The Baking Beauties recipe! AMAZING! I changed a few things to fit what I had on hand and viola – Gluten Free Onion Rings.
What You Need:
– 1 egg
– 1/4 cup vegetable oil
– 1.5 cups milk
– 1 cup GF Flour – I used Jules
– 1/2 tsp salt
– 1 tsp baking powder
– 1 vidalia onions cut into rings
– 1 tbsp seasoning salt
– 1 cup GF Flour
– 1/2 tbsp seasoning salt
– oil for frying – I used vegetable
How to Make It:
Heat oil in fryer to 350 degrees. Put cut onion rings into an ice bath. Mix egg, oil and milk together. Add flour, baking powder, salt and seasoning salt. You may need to add more milk if the batter is too thick. In a separate bowl mix together GF flour and seasoning salt.
Step One – Take onion ring out of water bath and put in dry flour mix.
Step Two – Put onion ring in batter to coat
Step Three – Put in fryer. It took me about 3-4 minutes per batch. I had to turn them halfway through to get both sides cooked.
Step Four – Put cooked onion rings onto plate with paper towel
Serve with your favorite sauce – I used Ranch!
This made a ton of onion rings so I refrigerated the ones we didn’t eat. I reheated them in the toaster oven and they came out great!

These look so delicious. I don’t have a fryer, but I have to figure out a way to make these!

Erin! They were super tasty! I’m pretty sure you could make this with a skillet and hot oil. It may just take a little longer. I have a small fryer so it was a slow process of cooking 2-4 at a time. Next time i’m going to try the skillet method!

Oh my goodness, you are going to save me from my pregnancy cravings! I’m making your recipe for Stuffed Peppers Casserole tonight and have to try these next. YUM YUM YUM. Thank you so much!

Suchada,
Glad you found us! I hope you enjoy the pepper casserole! It is a favorite of ours and so easy. These onion rings rock and will be one of the first things I make once I’m done nuring the twins (they don’t like onion milk).
