The hubby and I were able to run away for a night to celebrate our anniversary earlier this month. We choose to go to Winston-Salem, NC because it is less than 1.5 hours from our house and has lots to do. After doing some searching I found three good restaurants to try that had Gluten Free options. They are Village Tavern, River Birch Lodge and Mozelle’s. With only one night to get away I wasn’t sure we’d be able to visit them all but we made it work.
We stayed at the Brookstown Inn in downtown. The location is great and the atmosphere is very special. The building used to be a cotton mill and each of the rooms are different. It does include a breakfast of fruit, cereal, pastries and yogurt. The yogurt and fruit were my safe picks.
For dinner we went to Mozelle’s. This is a quint restaurant that serves “southern comfort food”. There is no Gluten Free menu so you just have to ask questions. Unfortunately our waitress wasn’t very knowledgeable so she took 4 to 5 trips to the kitchen to ask questions. From where we were sitting I could see the Chef so it would have been nice for him to just walk around the half wall and talk to me. For my meal I ordered the Filet Gorgonzola. It came with tasty potatoes, broccolini and a cream Gorgonzola sauce. The steak was very good dipped in the cheese sauce.
I ended the meal with the flour less chocolate brownie. The raspberry sauce was very good!
I was happy with the meal, however it wasn’t a lot of food and it was pricey.
Since we were hungry an hour later were we able to sneak in a second dinner! We ordered pizza from the Village Tavern and took it back to our room. They have an extensive Gluten Free menu. I ordered the Gluten Free Tavern pizza. The crust was thin and had great toppings! There are actually Village Taverns in other locations and we have since been back. This is a great Gluten Free find!
After breakfast in the hotel we went to a local winery then headed to River Birch Lodge for an early lunch. They also have a great Gluten Free menu with many options from Appetizers to Desserts. The staff was very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. They even brought out Gluten Free bread and butter for me! I’m pretty sure it was Udi’s bread. I love the little things to help out Gluten Free eaters!!
We started the meal with Lodge Chips. They are great fried potato and sweet potato chips that are cooked in a dedicated fryer. The ranch sauce and goat cheese sauce make these chips fantastic!
I ordered the pulled pork sandwich for lunch. It comes with fries that are awesome and cooked in the dedicated fryer. The pork had a great flavor that you could tell was slow cooked over smoke! The sauce was very good. The waiter did let me know that one of the ingredients is manufactured in a non Gluten Free facility so I may want to avoid it. He also said they were working on an alternative to make it safe. I love it when restaurants care that much!
Our trip to Winston Salem, NC was wonderful! I cherished the kid-free time with the hubby and enjoyed all the yummy Gluten Free food. Happy Gluten Free travels!
