Gluten Free Restaurant Review: Mellow Mushroom

I had heard from a friend that Mellow Mushroom had Gluten Free pizza so when Nick said he wanted pizza I knew where we were going!

I asked for the GF menu and was given this little yellow sheet.  There is special GF dough from Still Riding Pizza and then it lists the GF toppings.

I went for the GF dough with Ham and Pineapple toppings.

As far as taste goes it was OK but did not taste like regular pizza dough.  It was more sweet and cakey.   They use bean flower which has a pretty bad after taste in my opinion.   So it is a decent GF pizza option if you are OK with bean flower.

Nick loved his House Special and Cali ate toppings and crust from both.

When I compare Mellow Mushroom to Brixx I have to say the pizza actually tasted like pizza at Brixx where Mellow Mushroom’s pizza was cakey.

Between the Gluten Free Pizza at Mellow Mushroom and Brixx I’d go with Brixx! I’ve never heard of Pie Works before – I’ll check it out!

On my honeymoon in Tenn. I was craving pizza, we found a mellow mushroom. I loved the pizza! Wish there was a mellow mushroom in Iowa.

Our MM Veggie pizza was out faster than when we use to wait when we ordered regular dough pizza (greatly surprised). The crust was not like cake (as some reviews are suggesting). It did not have much taste, but was also not chewy (as reviews have suggested). The toppings were sparse making the pizza even more disappointing considering the cost, which we expected – but “come on” are veggies that expensive that they can’t afford to do better than sparse? We won’t be going back. I’ve found frozen gluten free pizza that tasted a lot better.

Was the pizza made in a safe – contamination free – area? I worry about these places and contamination. All that flour in the air – it seems unlikely to be completely safe. My daughter has celiac and her celiac numbers are important to her. Last visit she was 1.2 and doesn’t want to jeopardize that.

They do prep the pizza in a separate area. There is always a risk but we have been lucky.
