Trying to explain Celiac Disease to adults can be difficult at times, trying to explain it to children can seem impossible! I have two 6-year old nieces who don’t understand why I can’t eat their birthday cake or why my hamburger bun looks funny. My 2-year old daughter is too young to notice that mommy doesn’t eat the same foods as she does. But as she gets older and starts to notice things I will have to tackle the explanation of Celiac Disease.
When Katie contacted me about reading her book I was super pumped! I had been looking for a simple, straightforward and positive way to explain Celiac Disease.
Mommy, What is Celiac Disease? is a story of how a mom tells her daughter that the daughter has Celiac Disease. She addresses issues like cake and ice cream at birthday parties and snack foods. It provides simple answers that a child would understand. The book even explains what gluten is and how it hurts the body. She does a great job of describing Celiac Disease without going over a child’s head. The book focuses on the positives of eating Gluten Free: “our whole family will be healthier than ever now”, “I know we can do it because we’re a great team”, and “you’re very lucky, because your doctors figured it out early enough so your body can heal itself”. The book even has a helpful resource page with Gluten Free brands Katie uses for her family!
I look forward to sharing this book with my nieces and my daughter as she gets older.
If you are looking for a way to explain Celiac Disease to a child this book is an amazing tool to help you. Celiac Disease can seem limiting and hard at times but if you can help your child focus on the positives you can keep a smile on their face.

I would love to have this book for my son. He was diagnosed last July. Now is 3, back on the growth chart for his weight, and THRIVING. The book would help explaining why we eat gluten free.
