Surviving a Vacation Gluten Free

Last week we were able to get away with some friends for the week and go to the OBX.  That is the Outer Banks in NC for all you non-southerners.  We had 10 people in a big house right on the ocean.  It was wonderful!

This was my first week long vacation as a Gluten Free eater.  I was kind of worried about the trip because A- I can’t just eat anything and B – I’m pregnant and I eat A LOT.  What it ultimately came down to was planning!
My friend (the mom of the other family) did a great job of meal planning.  My plan was to get GF options that would go along with the meal everyone else was eating.  Once we got to the house I dropped off the toddler and went to the local Food Lion (grocery story) to get what we would need.
Some of the essentials I brought or purchased included:
– Gluten Free Bisquick
– Chicken
– GF Sandwich meat
– GF yogurt
– GF cereal
– Brown rice pasta
– GF pasta sauce
– GF salad dressing
– Lettuce
– Eggs
– GF Chips / snacks
– GF frozen pizza
– Nuts
– GF Mac-n-cheese
We stayed for 6 nights and only went out twice!  One of those meals included Five Guys!  SOOO good!
Junior Bacon Cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato – no bun!  The amazing fries are fresh cut and Gluten Free!
The other night out included a trip to a pizza place.  I baked my GF pizza before we left and took it with me.   I was able to enjoy pizza with everyone else!

The week was a success as a Gluten Free eater!  I felt like I was able to eat food like everyone else and didn’t get hungry.

This gives me hope for future vacations.

    Hey Pam,

That’s an awesome story! It’s inspiring to know I’m not the only one who has to super plan and precook when I travel- and to do it pregnant, kudos girl!!

I’m allergic to just about everything (dairy/soy/nuts/legumes…. list goes on…).

That’s why I developed special meal plans (gluten free, vegan, vegetarian)for the vacation tours offered by my company (Colombia World Tours).

Anyways, I wanted to let you know that if you want a vacation where you don’t have to worry about a thing, you got it! šŸ™‚

Feel free to contact me directly through my website if you have any questions.

    Take care and happy travels!!

I found your blog post while searching for gluten free pizza in OBX for my son & husband. FYI if you visit OBX again I did find that Maxximus Pizza (MilePost 14.5 in Nags Head) serves GF Pizza, chicken fingers, AND dessert!
