Were the Gluten Free Cheerios not what you hoped for?
From the 3 posts I’ve written about the Cheerios there have been comments made by people saying the Cheerios made them sick. This is very concerning on many levels!
Our family have been fine and has loved having the Cheerios back in our life, but not everyone has had the same experience.
I asked General Mills in an email:
“So I have written 3 blog posts now about the Cheerios and there are a number of comments saying that people have reacted to the Cheerios.
If people are getting sick from the Cheerios what is the plan?
Our family has been fine and have had at least 7 boxes now, but others eat one bowl and they get sick.
Just looking for some direction and hope to give people who are not having good experiences.”
This is their reply:
“We’re very sorry to hear that people are getting sick. We take these incidents very seriously and continue to ask people to reach out to our Consumer Services team (1-800-248-7310 between 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. CT, weekdays) with their specific box information. We are confident that every serving and box of our product is gluten-free. We have used external labs to test gluten-free Cheerios products, and their results are consistent with ours. That said, we know that there will always be people who suffer from allergies and other conditions that prevent them from eating gluten-free Cheerios; particularly if there is a previously unknown sensitivity to oats. We recommend consumers who do feel sick talk to their doctor, especially if you have a known sensitivity to oat products.” General Mills Cheerios Team
So what should you do if you have a negative experience with the Cheerios?
CALL THEM! 1-800-248-7310
What should do you if you are happy to have Cheerios back in your life?
CALL THEM! 1-800-248-7310
General Mills is listening, if you don’t speak up one way or the other how can you expect change? If we want to be able to trust the food we are eating is safe, we need to trust the people making the food.
Call me naive, un-educated, etc, but I met these people and I saw their passion and dedication. I eat the Cheerios because I trust the people making them. I also trust that if something is wrong they will work to fix it.
As Jim Murphy, the President of Big G Cereals, said to us in May, “The move to Gluten Free Cheerios is a long term play.”
Disclaimer: No compensation of any kind was received for this post, so leave the negative comments to yourself. Or call General Mills, they want to know.

Hello like I have said before I don’t a problem with Cheerios and I have Celiac Disease. I have tried the Multi-Grain and Honey Cheerios and I use Silk Almond Milk

I haven’t had any issues either, but I’m gluten intolerant. Tried both the regular yellow box variety and the Honey Nut variety, both didn’t give me problems.

Definitely agree. GlutenDude posted about his tour of their facilities and proprietary process, and had pretty much the same response.
It could be a Cheerios issue with a new process…. it could be a very contaminated worker in the process.
But I would also wonder about cross contamination… might a non-celiac family member dip into the box for a quick, dry snack– with more gluten on their hands or utensil than could be tolerated? Could a family member serve themselves too much cereal, and reflexively pour some back into the box– from a contaminated bowl? Could it have been the milk? There are just so many ways gluten can get into the body that it could take a forensic specialist to backtrack from a glutening.

I agree! I’ve been fine. We’ve bought one box of each of the flavors that are now GF and with the small amounts I’ve had of each, my mom and I have both been fine and we are extremely sensitive celiacs!

My two daughters with Celiacs are the only ones eating the gluten free Honey Nut Cheerios, and both of them have gotten major gluten reactions afterwards. All we can think is that the gluten free Cheerios aren’t actually completely gluten free. We will not be buying them again for quite awhile, until we can believe that whatever gluten contamination issue they have has been resolves.

I had a problem with the Honey Nut Cheerios box I had. I ate them for 3 straight days. I don’t have the box anymore. I threw it out once I discovered it was the problem.

Those folks may have an unrealized sensitivity to corn also, the Cheerios do contain corn starch in the first three ingredients. I was sad about that when I read the box since corn products are just not my friend but oats and I get along okay :-p

Looks like they had a lot get contaminated with wheat flour. They are doing a voluntary recall. http://generalmills.com//en/News/NewsReleases/Library/2015/October/cheerios-10-5/645b5aaf-c2ec-4661-b968-391f41953bfc
