Time to lose your mind friends! Lucky Charms are now GLUTEN FREE! That is right that wonderful cereal with marshmallows are now made with Gluten Free oat flour. That meansย I just devoured my first bowl of Lucky Charms in 5 years. Five years without this oh so special cereal. This cereal was a “treat” in my house growing up. I would strategically eat the oat pieces first so I could have a bowl full of the marshmallows at the end.
Our 4 year old Gluten Free twins have NEVER had Lucky Charms. They have never experienced the joy of marshmallows in cereal or how good the milk tastes when the cereal is gone. Tomorrow morning they will awake to a new treat – Gluten Free Lucky Charms. I can’t wait!
So you want to know how they are Gluten Free?
Here is the deal, General Mills spent a huge pile of money and time figuring out a way to sort the oats so that wheat and barley are taken out before the oats are ground into flour. This is done in a dedicated Gluten Free facility, Fridley Mill, that was built just for this process. I had the privilege of visiting General Mills in May to tour the facility and learned about the process. The oats are tested at several points during this process to make sure they are well below the FDA requirement of 20ppm. The oats are transported in designated Gluten Free containers from the mill to the plant to be turned into cereal. Every part of this process is done with dedicated Gluten Free lines, buildings, and trucks.
That is how 5 of the Cheerios flavors are Gluten Free and now how Lucky Charms are Gluten Free.
Since these are new to hit the shelves, make sure you look for the Gluten Free logo on the side of the Box.
Keep in mind if oats bother you as a Gluten Free person, then it doesn’t matter if the oats are Gluten Free or not. Use your judgement.
Having Lucky Charms makes me feel like a kid again! It is just one more product that makes me feel normal!
Our family is thrilled to have Lucky Charms to our pantry!
Disclaimer: I wasn’t paid by General Mills for this post, I bought the cereal with my money. I’ve met the people who are working hard to make the oat flour Gluten Free and I trust them. The disaster that happened with the Cheerios cross contamination has been fixed and learned from. We will eat the Cheerios and now the Lucky Charms. We have eaten a ton of the Cheerios and have NEVER gotten sick from them. If you disagree with General Mills or me, I understand but keep the hateful comments to yourself please. Like your momma told you, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.”
Kimberly Nelson says
This is great news… I’ll be passing this message along for others that can benefit… Thanks General Mills…

I’m super happy too!
Karen says
I’ve been impatiently waiting for these to show up in a store near me. So far only the old boxes without the gluten free labeling. ๐ Love the Cheerios.
imaceliac says
Don’t give up! Just look for the GF logo
rachel says
What store did you get them from? I can’t find them anywhere.
imaceliac says
This was a Wal-Mart in NC
Shera says
Are GF Lucky Charms available in Canada as well? So far I haven’t seen the GF labeled on the box…
imaceliac says
Not that I know of.
Lynne L says
Available at any Loblaws affiliate (i.e. No Frills, Superstore, Independent etc). Btw I have never reacted to their gf Lucky Charms.
Paige says
You do realize the Cheerios that claimed to be gluten free were recalled because of how many people actually were glutened by them, right?
imaceliac says
I am very familiar with the Cheerios recall. It was a huge mess that happened out of human error and it took way too many sick people to figure it out.
But I do trust the intentions of the Big G team and feel they are working hard to make everything safe moving forward.
Please make the best decision for you and your family.

I got sick from Lucky Charms last week! I’m still suffering!!!! ๐
It’s best to not eat any oat cereals at all. That’s just my opinion.
Morning says
I also was very sick from both cereals. This was last week. I’m bummed!
Karen says
Finally on our shelves! They’re delicious and I haven’t been sick once.
imaceliac says
WOOHOOO!! We LOVE ours!
Mckenna says
Are these available in Canada? My fiancรฉ is celiac and I’d love to surprise him with these.
imaceliac says
So only in the US. Sorry ๐ See if you can have someone mail you some
Melanie Ouellette says
I checked today and they are still just in USA ๐ Do you know where I can find a list of USA places where they are sold? I have friends who travel a lot and I would put them into the mission of finding those ๐ Thanks.
imaceliac says
I don’t know there plans to go outside the US. I know other countries have different rules for labeling. Send someone to the US and ship you a case:)
Lynne L says
I don’t if you found these yet..check Superstore or any Loblaws affiliate such as No Frills, Independent etc. I buy them all the time & have never had a problem.
Shara says
Unfortunately the gluten free Lucky Charms and gluten free Cherrios have both made me really sick. I’m so bummed. I’m confused at why they are making me sick because I can eat gluten free oatmeals and gluten free oatmeal bars with no problem. My brother who also has Celiac has had no problems with either cereals. I’m glad for those who have no issues… I’m envious.
imaceliac says
Sorry they have not worked out for you. ๐
We are all different
Jeanne says
They do it to me too, It’s because they’re not truly gluten free, they’re just legally gluten free. There is no test that can detect below 20ppm, so they can’t say something’s not gluten free if they can’t tell it isn’t. but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some particles. The oats have been grown in the same fields that wheat has, they’re a rotation crop, so sometime wheat comes up among the oats from the previous year’s planting and gets harvested with them. Their new process, sifts them out, but they have still been with the oats and rubbed on them and have dusted them basically. It’s an extremely miniscule amount, but like you, I’m sensitive enough that those rare, sparse, tiny particles still make me sick.
Kristine says
I wonder if it’s something in the marshmellows?
Amy says
I had them yesterday for the first time and got severely glutenized! I am a celiac, and am so bummed! I wonder if oats in general will just bother me.
Jeanne says
๐ Unfortunately for the really serious and problematic celiacs, this process isn’t good enough. I’ve had the so called gluten free Cheerios and got glutened. The process isn’t 100% and even if it is, the oats have still been in contact and rubbed against wheat and things rub off. They can’t test for less than 20 ppm, that’s why that’s all they need to do to declare something gluten free, but that doesn’t make it so for those of us who are extremely sensitive. All it takes is one tiny particle to set someone off. The only way for some of us is cereal that comes from dedicated gluten free oats and unshared facilities.
Lora Horvath says
I Love Lucky Charms, and since being diagnosed with Celiac Disease I have missed them greatly!!!! I saw this article and ran out to buy a box that was marked Gluten Free. I use an app on my phone called ShopWell. I tell the app what I am trying to avoid “gluten/wheat” and when I scan the bar code of the item I am checking the app will tell me if the particular item is ok for me to eat or not. When I scanned the box of Lucky Charms while still marked Gluten Free – my app tells me it is not ok for me to eat. Soooooo…..basically I am wondering if you know anything about this app and if so do you know why the app is telling me the box of Lucky Charms marked Gluten Free is coming up as a DO NOT EAT on my ShopWell app. Thank You for your help – I can not wait to dive into those yummy marshmallow shapes again!!! ๐
imaceliac says
Hey Lora,
I have never heard of ShopWell so I do not know how trustworthy it is. Also don’t know how often it is updated because the Lucky Charms are newly Gluten Free.
Overall we have inhaled box after box of these and had no issues.
Rainey says
I have a wheat allergy and I was so excited to finally be able to eat Lucky Charms again. That is until I did. I got so sick with GI problems and reflux. Unfortunately I won’t be eating them again. If you truly have an allergy please steer clear of these.
imaceliac says
So sorry you had a bad experience.
Andy says
The “glutening” symptoms many are describing here sound like they could possibly be attributed to lactose intolerance. I would suggest switching to lactose-free milk when consuming cereal to see if it alleviates the issues.
Shawna says
Ummm I TRULY have an allergy called Celiac’s Disease and I’ve eaten them multiple times with no issues. Please don’t make it seem that the ones who aren’t having an issue must not TRULY have an allergy because that’s simply not true. My CD was diagnosed and confirmed through both blood test and small intestine biopsy and I have no issues with the Cheerios or the Lucky Charms. I’m sorry you had issues but please don’t make it seem like those that are ok must not have an allergy.

Are the Lucky Charm Treats GF as well?
