If you or someone you love has Celiac Disease, it is time to encourage those around you to get tested.
May is Celiac Disease Awareness month and it allows us the opportunity to shine a big light on this auto-immune disease and the challenges we face.
Celiac Disease Facts
- Celiac Disease can develop at any age
- There are over 200 symptoms
- Celiac Disease is hereditary
- The only cure/ treatment is to live a 100% Gluten Free life
- An official diagnosis includes a blood test for antibodies and then confirmed by an endoscopic biopsy
- An estimated 1 in 133 people in the US have Celiac Disease and 83% are mis-diagnosed
I have been living a 100% Gluten Free life since my diagnosis in January 2011. But it took 15 years of mis-diagnosis to finally get my answer. You can read my full story here.
Take this month to education those around you. Chances are 1 of your 133 friends/family members/ co-workers have Celiac Disease and don’t even know it.
On a personal note, I will spend May 1st at the Pediatric Gastroenterologist to get more tests run on our youngest. She is 6 and has many of the Celiac Disease symptoms. It is time we have an official diagnosis for her and know for sure one way or the other.
Take the step – educate others – get tested – live Gluten Free
