Tres Pupusas Brings El Salvador to You

First let’s start with the obvious questions: “What is a pupusas?”  In it’s simplest form a pupusas is a corn tortilla filled with goodies.  These tasty pupusas originate from El Salvador.  They can be filled with meat, beans, veggies, cheese, or just about anything.  My first experience with pupusas came from Tres Pupusas at Expo East.  After one bit I was hooked!  You get a whole meal wrapped in a corn tortilla!

Tres Pupusas

Tres Pupusas is one of the only companies in the US making these amazing pupusas and they make theirs with non-GMO corn.   Pupusas are naturally Gluten Free so they are safe for us Celiacs and Gluten Free peeps.  They have five varieties: Green Chile and Cheese, Kale and Pinto Bean, Pinto Bean and Cheese, Spinach and Cheese and Black Bean and Sweet Corn.  All five are vegetarian and two are even vegan if that is what you need.  Personally my favorite flavor is the Black Bean and Sweet Corn, following closely by the Spinach and Cheese.

The pupusas come in boxes that have four pupusas inside.  You can find them in the freezer section of over 700 grocery stores and nationwide in Whole Foods Markets starting February 2015!

When you are ready to enjoy the pupusas it is best to cook them on the stovetop.  I tried them in the microwave and they were fine, but the stovetop gives them a nice crispy outside and heats the inside better.  You can also whip them up in under 10 minutes so it is a fast meal.

The pupusas are also kid friendly.  They are the perfect size for little hands to hold.  Our three year olds called them pancakes with cheese because pupusas was too hard to say.

Pupusas

Traditionally pupusas are served with a cabbage slaw called “Curitdo” and each box of Tres Pupusas has the recipe on it.  We enjoyed ours in various ways.  One day it was on a bed of spinach topped with spicy sour cream, another day it was with salsa and another day it was with a fried egg and cheese on top.  All were super tasty!

I miss authentic pupusas from the Salvadorian restaurant I would visit in Pasadena, CA before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. My favorite was the zucchini filled ones, served with a yummy pickled cabbage. I would love to try the bean and cheese Tres Pupusas!
